My new blog
Posted on 2004-10-05 12:38:10

For everyone here who comes to read my blog (I'm sure it's vast armies of people) I've been running a new one.

I *still* have plans to *one day* update this site however I don't have the time to do that. I won't be removing anything that is currently available so the site is still usable and anyone who wants to use the blog system is more than welcome, but unless a serious problem is found, I won't be making any changes for a while.

Cool

Firebird 0.7
Posted on 2004-01-12 05:32:48

Just as a small update (my previous rant doesn't really need so much attention anymore). About three months ago Internet Explorer 6 started to use 100% processor utilisation if I had more than 3 windows open (which I frequently do) and upon closing them one by one, would not free that utilisation until all were closed. This, as well as some other small annoyances with IE lead me to try using Mozilla Firebird.

I had tried Mozilla before (I think version 0.4?) and I hated it so much. I felt like I was just using Netscape 4 (I know they are virtually the same thing but still). Anyway, I was happy to find the Firebird 0.7 not only is a lot faster than Mozilla was but that it offers many more features than IE does now. One feature I like a lot is the way that if a site offers multiple style sheet options there is a popup menu on the Firebird interface that allows you to change it to other styles without having to reload the page! Of course there is the tabbed browsing and other nice features that it has always had.

I was also quite pleased to see that most sites these days do a pretty good job of supporting proper internet standards (Which both Mozilla and Firebird strictly follow while IE uses its own standards). Also worth considering is that while Firebird has a new release every few months, the next version of Internet Explorer is not going to appear until Longhorn is released (there should be an update to IE in the form of a service pack at some point I have heard but that won't add much beyond maybe pop-up blocking).

I strongly recommend that you all try Firebird.

If you really want to stick with IE I recommend that you install the Google-Bar. It adds many cool features to IE such as pop-up blocking and integrated Google search (which is already in Firebird Wink)

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years.

My coffee cost me money - lets protest!
Posted on 2003-10-10 11:33:18

Well, it's been annoying me (more than usual, normally I just don't care and let this sort of crap slip). Here are my views on the protest at Massey.

What a load of shit. I mean a 3.5% increase is such a tiny amount it's not worth even worrying about. On the off chance you haven't heard about it - fees for Massey students in 2004 will be increasing by about 125 bucks next year. Some students protested by breaking into the Registry building, smashing two glass doors and giving the staff the fright of their lives (40 locked themselves in a room out of fear). Massey called the cops, the students were dragged away.

The next day we had the MUSA president come to our class and give an "apology". It was pathetic - she wasn't serious, she found it quite amusing. She made pokes at the Massey management even during her apology ("Massey said they wouldn't call the police and 10 minutes later the police turned up and dragged us away" - well, shit, maybe that was because you said it would be a peaceful protest and then you smashed your way into a building causing thousands of dollars of damage and scared the life out of the staff? Just a thought).

I see it simply as a bunch of students who have too much time on their hands and aren't at university for a real education wasting everyone’s time in the name of helping students. The reason I say a real education is that maybe you wouldn't have a 45,000 dollar student loan when you're doing a BA if you actually got off your ass and finished the degree in time rather than "living the lifestyle" rather than working on passing exams and then bitching that the ride isn't free.

Let’s not forget either that MUSA - the students’ champion - is the most expensive student association in New Zealand and increased their compulsory fees by over 30% last year. But wait, hand on, I thought we didn't like even 3.5% increases? Self serving bastards.

Ah well, I guess I can say all this - I'm not going to be at Massey next year to experience the financial death blow that is 125 extra dollars a year. Thank God for that, I might not have been able to pay MUSA the compulsory 180 odd dollars that they take from me even thought I don't use any of their facilities (not because I don't know about them - because I don't want them). The only thing I do have to do with MUSA is that I read their paper, which, for the last 6 months, has been nothing more than bitching by the MUSA people that they don't get enough students protesting and that students just don't seem to care. How about you take the hint MUSA?

P.S. This is not an attack on MUSA in general but at the people currently running it. In my first two years at Massey I was more than happy with their work.

Well, it's been sometime since I last composed a message for the frontpage. I hope everyone is keeping busy - hopefully not too busy, as I have been. There haven't been many updates lately mainly because of my Software Engineering C project and another web project I am working on.

It's impressive to see we now have more than 1200 registered users! The desktop section seems to keep this site just under our cap so we're still getting lots of visitors just not many common faces posting their blogs etc (they are mostly friends of mine who are also flat out).

Anywho - just thought I would post this to let you know the site isn't dead Smile

400 users...last time, I swear!
Posted on 2003-06-19 03:13:31

Well I didn't think I would be posting that we had hit 400 users so quickly but it appears we have managed it!

I probably wont be mentioning when we hit a milestone number of users again for quite a while since it's obvious that the numbers will keep increasing at their current rate for quite some time. Maybe when we hit 1000 members.

Thanks to all those who have joined. Oh well - I have an exam this morning so I cant stay on here all morning.

300 Users!
Posted on 2003-06-11 06:54:53

Wow, it's hasn't been long since I last posted that TraskMicrosystems.com had 200 registered users. It seems the site is really gathering a lot of attention lately due to some minor changes I have made to it.

Although most of the users aren't blog users they are registered which is good because it provides a positive feeling to those who are thinking about joining.

Anywho - I have to keep studying... God I hate it. At least it will all be over by the end of next friday! Good luck to any of you out there who are doing exams.

Graphic Update 3
Posted on 2003-06-06 10:06:22

Furthering what I have done yesterday I have added a couple more graphics updates. This time it's mostly been done to the user center - the screen presented to users after they have logged in.

For that I have simply created some bigger and nicer looking icons.

I have also rounded the bottom of the entries on the frontpage here.

While that is not a lot of changes I have been doing a bit of a code cleanup as well - which took about 95% of the time for this update. Hopefully as I continue cleaning the code the site will become faster and it will correct some of the problems that occur on some browsers.

Graphic Update 2
Posted on 2003-06-05 17:31:02

Well, for the second time today I am composing a site wide message here. I have updated the graphics for the frontpage (the page that you are reading this from no less Very Happy)

The updates include -

1) Updated the site name text at the top to something slightly more attractive
2) Altered the widget design so they aren't so boxed in any more
3) Temporarily removed the advertising widgets, partly due to not needing them and partly to the download time (note: Bloggy will be back Very Happy)
4) Updated the look of these main message tables. However they will change a lot more (probably tomorrow).

As mentioned in change 4 - hopefully tomorrow I will update some of the general look of the site some more. Thanks to Rowena for giving me some help with Photoshop and stuff Smile Much appreciated Smile

Graphic Update 1
Posted on 2003-06-05 11:21:39

I have done up the users page again Very Happy The changes are fairly minor but are obvious. They include -

1) An information panel showing total number of users, most recently joined member and a link to join the site.
2) A removal of email addresses being available
3) Pagination of users, limiting to 50 per page (if you want to be on the frontpage you need to post more blog entries and get more hits to your blog Smile)
4) Graphic overhaul. I have added some nicer graphics to the page to make it look nicer. I will probably add more eventually as I learn more about Photoshop.

That's really all I have done. I hope you guys enjoy it.
